Future of Sex

May 12, 2017

In 2010, the iPhone 4 came with a front-facing camera – that made the selfie go viral and changed the way people, in particular women, produced, shared and controlled images of themselves. Since then, attitudes toward female sexuality have undergone incredible change - thanks in part to the supportive communities and activism on the internet. At the same time, the culture of sharing images cultivated a dark underbelly online, where revenge porn and non-consensual distribution of images has generated a new form of sexual violence. Today, 1 in 5 Australians have been victims of revenge porn. How do we untangle the culture of nude pics when, for most young people, sexting is considered normal, if not more normal, than a phone call? On this episode of Future of Sex, Bryony Cole explores the complicated world of women’s bodies on the internet, from nude Tumblrs to slut shaming. She interviews Emily Lindin, founder of The Unslut Project and Sloane Cameron, a nude Tumblr creator. Both offer perspectives of how sexuality may keep up with technology.
